I have been asked to share the below with our members who may be able to assist with listening to children read in local primary schools.

This scheme has been introduced to help with children’s literacy skills and apparently has been successful and popular with WI members - in fact it got off the ground thanks to a partnership with the Bedfordshire Federation. It has become so popular that they now have Schoolreader volunteers in over  a third of primary schools in Bedfordshire – and are thereby making a real difference to children's literacy in that county.

Schoolreaders would now like to extend into Essex, kindly draw to your members attention, and if they would be interested they should make contact direct with Schoolreaders (contact details in the attached flyer.

Schoolreaders  in Essex

Do you have an hour or two a week to listen to children read in a local primary school? The highly successful Schoolreadersscheme is expanding inEssex and volunteers are needed. The scheme launched in Bedfordshire with the partnership of the Bedfordshire FWI three years ago and has been so popular that there are now volunteers in over one third of all primary schools in that county and making a real difference to children’s literacy. No qualifications are required- simply a good command of spoken and written English.

Schoolreaders is flexible and will match your availability to an appropriate school. Volunteers find it most rewardingseeing the impact that their time can make on a child’s reading ability and confidence.

If you, or anyone that you know, would like to join or learn more about the scheme and charity, please visit the website www.schoolreaders.org.

Volunteers and schools can join the scheme via the website or for more information can phone 01234 924111 or email admin@schoolreaders.org.
