Goldhanger Parish Magazine Article - August 2015

GOLDHANGER, LITTLE TOTHAM and TOLLESHUNT MAJOR W.I.

The monthly meeting of the WI was held in Goldhanger Village  Hall on Wednesday 1st July.  The Minutes of the meeting in May were read, but there were no matters arising.

Pam reported on her visit to The Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, name dropping a few famous people she had seen.  She reported that it had been a very interesting and enjoyable experience.   Joyce attended the WI General Meeting which was held at The Royal Albert Hall along with a member of the Tollesbury WI. They had made the decision to travel by coach instead of the train, and unfortunately this has cost them precious time due to traffic and they arrived too late to see The Queen. One of the Resolutions urging the Government to make a distinction between Nursing Care and Personal Care in the assessment of individuals was discussed.  Due to certain wording etc the Resolution was deferred.   A television producer informed everyone that she was due to make a  new programme about the WI and was titling it “Cake Makers and Trouble Makers”.

Reporting on recent events it was announced that The Annual Plant Sale had been very successful and after costs were deducted a good profit was made.  Also, the ‘Putting Lunch’ held at The Forresters, had been enjoyed by all.  The Luncheon trip on the Thames had been a very successful day.

Recently the Village Hall Committee had delivered to all residents, a questionnaire.  Barbara informed members that the Hall was in need of extensive renovations.  In order to carry out the work the Committee was applying for grants.  However the “Powers that be” need to know that the local community are involved, and are in favour of the proposed work.  Barbara  said that  so far only a few of the questionnaires had been returned, and urged everyone to complete theirs as soon as possible in order for the necessary paperwork to be submitted.

Jackie told of her hobby of making decorated clay pots and asked members if they had any old jewelry that they could give her.

Future Events – Annual Lunch on 10th August – Carol said she has received a menu from Salty Dog and this was discussed along with other venues.  It was agreed that other venues should  be explored and Carol will report back at the next meeting.  Another possible event was the theatre show “Guys and Dolls” and members were in favour of Carol investigating costs and dates.  It was general agreed that February 2016 would be a suitable date.  Pauline said that the coach taking members to see “Gypsy” in September was going cost £12 each and requested payment be made as soon as possible.

The Speaker this month was Carol Harris and her talk was called “Putting on the Ritz”.  She had brought along a variety of  dresses and accessories all from the 20’s and 30’s era.,  and some  of the underwear she displayed caused much amusement.  She told of the changing dress codes that occurred in the early 1900’s, from corsets to the “easy to wear” styles of the “Flapper ‘era.  After her talk, members were able to examine the array of various clothes and ask Carol questions about materials etc.

Birthday posies were given out.  Pat won ‘The Best Flower ‘ with a Perpetual Sweet pea and Sandra came second with her Alstroemaria

The next meeting will be held in the Village Hall on Wednesday August 5th
